Oran Mers
Was Churchill right to bombard the French fleet?

Was Churchill right to bombard the French fleet at the port of Mers-el-Kebir right outside Oran, Algeria in July 1940? I don’t think he was in a position anymore to trust French Admiral Darlan or his command anymore. Your thoughts?

Darlan was not trustworthy, and the French fleet would have been a major threat at the hands of the Germans.

Overall, it was the best thing to do, and it’s not like the British were happy to do it after what they had been through together with the French army in WW1 and in the Battle of France.
The major problem was that Vichy France used it for propaganda.
